Volkswagen Golf R Estate spied for the first time, production still pending

A prototype of the Volkswagen Golf R Estate has been caught on camera for the first time by our spy photographers.

Although Volkswagen is testing an R version of the Golf Estate, the German marque still hasn't made up its mind whether such a model will reach dealerships in the near future. One of our spy photographers talked to a test driver and he said VW hasn't decided whether to mass-produce the Golf R Estate.

Under the hood is most likely the same 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the Golf R hatchback which develops 300 HP (221 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) sent to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system through either a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed DSG. It also has a sport-tuned suspension reducing the ride height while a fifth-gen Haldex coupling system is also part of the package.

If green-lighted for production, the Volkswagen Golf VII Estate R will likely be introduced in October at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Sales will probably commence early next year for a starting price of around 40,000 EUR since the hatchback costs 38,325 EUR in Germany.
