New York Live: BMW Concept X5 eDrive
BMW has detailed its latest Concept X5 eDrive at the New York International Auto Show.
Based on the newest generation of the X5 utility vehicle, the Concept X5 eDrive swaps out a conventional drivetrain for a much more efficient plug-in hybrid unit. The system consists of a 245 horsepower TwinPower four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor that adds 95 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
With its lithium-ion batteries fully charged, the Concept X5 eDrive can cover 20 miles on electric power alone. On battery power the Concept X5 eDrive can hit a top speed of 75mph.
The Concept X5 eDrive is also plenty zippy, capable of accelerating from 0-60 in under 7 seconds.
Although the plug-in hasn't been tested by the EPA, BMW says the Concept X5 eDrive has been rated at 74.3mpg on the European cycle.
Like other modern BMWs, the Concept X5 eDrive comes equipped with a Driving Experience Control, allowing for several different vehicle settings. In addition to the standard Comfort and Sport settings, the system also has an Eco Pro mode, which manages the X5's plug-in drivetrain in the most efficient manner possible.
The driver also has the option to switch to all-electric mode with the push of a button. The Concept X5 eDrive also has a Save Battery mode, which deliberately saves the battery's charge for use at a later time, such as when traveling through an urban center.
Despite having its batteries mounted below the rear cargo floor, BMW says the Concept X5 eDrive retains the standard X5's functionality. The Concept's luggage compartment is large enough to swallow two large suitcases or four golf bags.
BMW hasn't announced any official production plans for the Concept X5 eDrive, but expect to see the plug-in SUV in dealer showrooms within the next few years.
