2016 Mercedes G-Class to lose up to 825 lbs
New details are starting to emerge about the 2016 Mercedes G-Class.
According to Automobile Magazine, the redesigned model will be approximately four inches wider than its predecessor and ride on an aluminum platform which could result in weight saving of up to 825 lbs (374 kg). While is significantly higher than earlier estimates of 441 lbs (200 kg), the US-spec G550 tips the scales at 5,578 lbs (2530 kg) so it can use all the liposuction it can get.
Fat jokes aside, the next G is expected to have an evolutionary design that incorporates the slab-sided styling of its predecessor. However, the model could have a shorter roof and some aerodynamic styling tweaks.
The SUV is also slated to receive a modern interior with higher quality materials and advanced infotainment systems. Despite this, the model will reportedly echo its predecessor and have a passenger side grab handle as well as prominent buttons for the locking differentials.
In the United States, the entry-level model will reportedly feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that develops approximately 460 bhp (343 kW). Those looking for a little more gusto should hold out for the G63 AMG which is expected to use a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that cranks out nearly 570 bhp (425 kW). There are also rumors about a plug-in hybrid variant but nothing is official as of yet.
