VW to launch sub-Tiguan crossover in 2016

A report coming out of Germany finds Volkswagen will launch a compact crossover designed to slot between the Tiguan and the upcoming Taigun in late 2016.

 

Billed as a more rugged alternative to the Golf, the yet-unnamed crossover will ride on the company's modular MQB platform. It will stretch approximately 164 inches long, meaning it will be about ten inches shorter than the current-generation Tiguan, about twelve inches longer than the Taigun and roughly the same size as the upcoming Audi Q1. Insiders expect the crossover to tip the scale at no more than 2,700 pounds.

 

The crossover will be offered with several new three-cylinder engines including a 1.0-liter gas-burning TSI unit rated at 114 ponies and a 103-horsepower 1.4-liter TDI turbodiesel. The bulk of the crossover's four-cylinder engines will be carried over from the Golf, and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system will be offered at an extra cost on select models.

 

German magazine Auto Bild reports Volkswagen will build a performance-focused variant of the crossover equipped with a 280-horsepower four-banger if company executives sense there is enough demand from the public. A hot-rodded diesel-burning model could also join the lineup later in the production run.

 

If the rumor proves true, additional details about Volkswagen's sub-Tiguan crossover will emerge in the coming months. The soft-roader is tentatively expected to go on sale in Europe in early 2017.
