2015 Volkswagen Passat going upmarket
New details have emerged about the 2015 Volkswagen Passat set to be unveiled online.
The Passat is Volkswagen's second-best selling model after the Golf so it plays a very important role in the lineup. An all-new model is going to be shown on Thursday and according to Reuters it will go upmarket in order to better compete with its German rivals from Mercedes-Benz (C-Class), BMW (3-Series) and Audi (A4).
Comprehensive details are already available, with probably the most important being a significant 85 kg (188 lbs) weight loss. Also interesting is a 2.0 TDI outputting 240 PS (176 kW) in its highest state of tune as lesser 150 PS (110 kW) and 190 PS (140 kW) will also be offered. A smaller 1.6 TDI with 120 PS (88 kW) is also planned. Gasoline choices will include a 1.4 TSI with 125 PS (92 kW) and 150 PS (110 kW), along with a 1.8 TSI rated at 180 PS (132 kW) and a beefier 2.0 TSI generating 220 PS (162 kW) and 280 PS (206 kW).
All these engines meet Euro 6 emissions standards and Volkswagen has already announced a more frugal plug-in hybrid variant featuring an electric motor and a 9.9 kWh battery. This model will have a combined range of up to 600 miles (966 km) and should do approximately 31 miles (50 km) on electric power.
The 2015 Passat is going to be 4767mm long and will be offered with standard LED taillights and optional LED headlights featuring Dynamic Light Assist. The cabin will host Audi TT's 12.3-inch customizable digital instrument cluster as well as a head-up display and several safety systems like Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert, Traffic Jam Assist, City Emergency Braking and others.
It will go effectively on sale in November and according to a company source will carry an estimated starting price of 26,000 EUR so it will be a tad more expensive than the outgoing model. A public debut will take place early October at the Paris Motor Show.
