Mercedes S500 Plug-in Hybrid is faster & more efficient than expected

Mercedes has released some new details about the S500 Plug-in Hybrid ahead of its launch in September.

 

While Mercedes originally expected the model would consume 3.0L / 100 km (78.4 mpg US / 94.1 mpg UK) that figure has been improved to 2.8L / 100 km (84 mpg US / 100.8 mpg UK). Mercedes says this will enable the car to become the "first luxury sedan with a certified consumption below three liters per 100 km."

 

Besides being more fuel efficient, the electric-only range has increased from 30 km (18.6 miles) to 33 km (20.5 miles). Even more importantly, the 0-100 km/h acceleration times have go down from 5.5 to 5.2 seconds.

 

As we have previously reported, the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will feature a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine and a 107 bhp (80 kW) electric motor. This will enable the model to have a combined maximum output of 435 bhp (325 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.
