2016 Toyota Prius could offer all-wheel drive

Toyota powertrain guru Koei Saga has revealed some new details about the 2016 Prius.

 

Speaking to Automotive News, Saga confirmed the car will be offered with both nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries. He declined to elaborate but speculation suggests the entry-level model will use nickel-metal hydride batteries, while higher-end variants will feature lithium-ion batteries for an increased electric-only range.

 

The senior managing officer of powertrain development also hinted the model could be offered with all-wheel drive. While nothing is official, Saga said "I think we will possibly do it."

 

The 2016 Prius will ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) and feature improved aerodynamics as well as a more accommodating cabin with "significant refinements in design, layout and ease of operation." Toyota has been tight-lipped about specifications but has previously said we can expect a smaller electric motor and a more efficient petrol engine.
