2017 Kia Niro Hybrid spied, debuts next year

The 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid has been spied undergoing testing in Germany.

 

Designed to slot between the Soul and the Sportage, the compact crossover is heavily disguised but previous teaser sketches have shown the model will have a sporty front bumper with a tiger-nose grille, vertical side intakes, and chrome accents. The crossover will also have sweptback headlights, plastic body cladding, and muscular body work. Out back, there will be a tailgate-mounted spoiler, wraparound taillights and a skid plate.

 

Kia has been tight-lipped about specifications but the model is slated to ride on a dedicated eco-car platform and feature "environmentally-conscious technologies" as well as "next-generation powertrains." That's a little vague but the model is expected to use a hybridized powertrain that consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 1.56 kWh battery pack. The engine will reportedly produce 105 PS (77 kW) and 147 Nm (108 lb-ft) of torque and Kia has said the model will have CO2 emissions of approximately 90 g/km combined in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

 

The Niro Hybrid will go on sale early next year so look for a possible debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
