2015/12/15 10:16:58

Genesis G90 goes official as Hyundai’s first premium model
This is it. Hyundai’s first ever true luxury model has made its online debut as the Genesis G90 (EQ900 in South Korea).

Hyundai is ready to retire the Equus to replace it with its new G90 that serves as a flagship model part of the newly founded Genesis luxury sub-brand. It does look significantly more upscale on the outside than its predecessor thanks to an elongated hood and a prominent hexagonal grille featuring a chrome finish. Those multi-spoke wheels add a bit of style, while the vertically positioned taillights flowing down the rear end are also a nice touch. Lots of exterior metallic accents contribute to the premium feel and that sense of a more upmarket car continues on the inside.

There aren’t a lot of photos showing the cabin at this point, but from what we can see, Genesis will offer the G90 / EQ900 with a chocolate leather upholstery, lots of wood trim, and a rear-seat entertainment system with 9.2-inch tablets. The center console goes from the front all the way to the back where the rear passengers control the electrically-operated seats and numerous other functions. More importantly, there’s substantially more rear legroom as the wheelbase has been stretched by 4.5 inches (115 mm) to 124.4 inches (3160 mm).

Going through the South Korean press release (using Google Translate), we managed to find out the G90 will get a Lexicon sound system, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging, and a three-zone “smart” climate control system. Genesis says NVH levels are down compared to the Equus and the car comes with triple door seals, double glass insulation and other tweaks to ensure a comfortable and quiet ride.

In terms of engines, the Genesis G90 will be powered by a Lambda 3.8 V6 GDi, Lambda 3.3 V6 T-GDi, and a Tau 5.0 V8. The most interesting of the bunch is the new 3.3 featuring a twin-turbo setup and pushing out 370 hp (276 kW) and 377 lb-ft (510 Nm). As you would expect, the proprietary H-TRAC permanent all-wheel drive system is implemented.

Sales of the KDM-spec Genesis EQ900 will kick off in the first half of 2016, with the international G90 arriving in the second half of the year.

Following a reveal earlier today, now we bring full technical specifications for the Equus-replacing Genesis G90.

Without further ado, the G90 is 204.9 inches (5205 mm) long, 75.4 inches (1915 mm) wide, 58.8 inches (1495 mm) tall, and with a 124.4 inches (3160 mm) wheelbase. Depending on the model’s configuration, weight varies from 5,335 lbs (2,420 kg) to 5,721 lbs (2,595 kg) and all of them have a trunk capacity of 17.1 cu ft. (484 liters). Genesis gives prospect customers the opportunity to choose between newly designed 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels.

As far as the engines are concerned, three units will be offered: the entry-level 3.8-liter GDI, the mid-range 3.3-liter T-GDI, and the range-topping 5.0-liter GDI. The 3.8 is rated at 228 hp (170 kW) and (293 lb-ft) 397 Nm which is enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.9 seconds. Upgrade to the newly developed 3.3 turbo and you get to control 268 hp (200 kW) and 377 lb-ft (510 Nm) granting the full-size luxury sedan with a sprint in 6.2 seconds. The V8 is the cream of the crop with 308 hp (229 kW) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm), enough for a quick run in 5.7 seconds.

These engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission featuring a lock-up torque converter and send power to the rear wheels, but an optional H-TRAC AWD will be available. Genesis mentions the suspension setup consists of a multi-link arrangement with high-performance dampers to enable a silky smooth ride. This can be enhanced by getting the optional Genesis Adaptive Control Suspension system.

Reducing NVH levels was a top priority during the G90’s development as the engineers spent “hundreds of hours to fine tuning every aspect of noise reduction and comfort enhancement.” The end result according to Hyundai’s premium marque is “best-in-class ratings for in-cabin quietness.”

As for the interior, the driver’s seat can be electronically-controlled in one of the 22 ways available to find the perfect seating position. There’s also a fancy Lexicon surround sound system working together with the 12.3-inch infotainment system. Other goodies include a three-zone AC, wireless charging, VIP passengers seats with 14-way adjustability, semi-aniline leather upholstery, and real wood trim.

In terms of safety, the 2016 Genesis G90 hosts a plethora of systems, such as Smart High Beam Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Detection, Active Blind Spot Detection, Driver Attention Alert, etc. There’s also a one-megapixel rearview camera sharing screen with the 360-degree Around View Monitor.

It will go on sale in South Korea as the “Genesis EQ900” at the beginning of next year, with the international “G90” arriving later on in United States, China, Russia, and countries in the Middle East. An additional five Genesis-branded models will be out over the next 5 years.
