BMW i5 rumored to be a crossover

The BMW i5 rumor mill is back in action as a new report is indicating the model will likely be a crossover.

 

Previous reports had suggested the i5 would either be a sedan or a stretched version of the i3 but Auto Express is countering those claims by reporting a crossover is being favored by executives.

 

If true, the model could prove quite popular as the crossover segment is booming and consumers have embraced crossovers with open arms and open wallets. An eco-friendly i5 crossover would also give BMW a competitor to the Audi Q6 e-tron and the recently launched Tesla Model X.

 

Details are light at the moment but the publication is reporting the i5 will use lightweight carbon fiber and an all-electric powertrain that enables the model to have a range in excess of 200 miles (321 km). The crossover is also expected to have autonomous driving technology and an assortment of connectivity features.

 

There's no word on when the i5 will be introduced but speculation suggests a launch could be timed to coincide with new German incentives for electric vehicles. This means a launch could be "well over" a year away.
