BMW 730Li heading to China with turbo 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine
A new report states the BMW 7 Series is going to receive a turbocharged 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine for the entry-level 730Li version destined to reach the Chinese market.
The engine in question is the B48 unit with 252 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque as seen in the facelifted 330i. It will serve as a replacement for the naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit of the 730Li (F02) where it has 258 hp and 229 lb-ft.
It won’t actually be the first 7 Series to come with a four-cylinder engine as the 740e plug-in hybrid also has a 2.0-liter unit working with an electric motor, an 8-speed gearbox, and an xDrive setup.
It’s too early to say whether BMW has plans to keep the 730Li a China-only affair or the model will be sold in other markets as well. Latest reports indicate the 730Li will go on sale in China from March 2016 and will obviously act as the most affordable offering for BMW’s flagship model.
