Chrysler retires Town & Country to make room for 2017 Pacifica
Chrysler has taken the wraps off the 2017 Pacifica which effectively replaces the Town & Country.
In an attempt to make the minivan segment a little bit more exciting, Chrysler is showing in Detroit the 2017 Pacifica that features a design reminiscent of the 200. The model rides on an all-new platform which is probably why FCA decided to ditch the “Town & Country” moniker in favor of “Pacifica.”
While the minivan’s dimensions have remained basically the same, the new platform has enabled a massive weight loss of more than 300 pounds (136 kilograms). Thanks to the extensive diet, the base Pacifica tips the scales at 4,330 lbs (1,964 kg).
The interior cabin also shows its Chrysler 200 roots, but with new materials and colors as well as the obvious goodies you’ll find in a minivan. The highlight is a 8.4-inch touchscreen part of the Uconnect infotainment system and there’s also a new rear-seat entertainment system featuring dual 10-inch touchscreens.
It’s a great minivan for longer journeys as it has a total interior volume of around 200 cubic feet (5,663 liters) and a massive cargo capacity of 140.5 cu. ft. (3,978 liters) behind the first row. The 2017 Pacifica also comes with Chrysler’s Stow ‘N Go seating which means that you will be able to fold down the seats into the floor whenever carrying voluminous cargo.
In terms of engines, the minivan can be had with a naturally aspirated V6 engine producing 287 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque linked to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The same engine detuned to 248 hp and 230 lb-ft powers the Pacifica Hybrid where it works together with a 16-kWh battery. It enables a fuel economy of around 80 miles per gallon equivalent and the battery juice will last for up to 30 miles (48 kilometers) of electric range.
Due to the added batteries that take up more space, the Pacifica Hybrid is not as practical as the regular version since you won’t be able to order the aforementioned Stow ‘N Go seating. The battery pack is located underneath the middle of the floor and can be fully recharged in two hours using a 240-volt plug.
Chrysler will sell the 2017 Pacifica in six trim levels, while the hybrid version is only getting two versions. The regular model will hit dealerships this spring and is going to be followed by the hybrid in the second half of the year.
