Mercedes GLC F-Cell coming next year

Mercedes is getting serious about fuel cell vehicles as the company's head of research and development has confirmed the automaker will introduce the GLC F-CELL next year.

 

Speaking to Autocar, Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber said the model will have "the newest fuel cell technology available." He declined to elaborate but said the crossover will benefit from recent advancements in the field of hydrogen fuel cell technology. This likely means the model will have a compact hydrogen fuel cell powertrain that doesn't take up as much room as previous systems.

 

The model is slated to be offered in select markets and is rumored to cost approximately ￡50,000 ($71,220).

 

Besides confirming plans for the GLC F-CELL, Weber said the company is "well advanced" on its plan to offer an all-new electric vehicle. Little is known about the model but it is expected to have a range between 250 and 300 miles. The electric vehicle will reportedly be unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor before going on sale in 2018.
