Honda Civic hatchback prototype shows sporty design in Geneva
Honda has officially introduced the Civic hatchback prototype at the Geneva Motor Show.
Looking substantially sportier than the model is about to replace, Honda’s prototype for the Euro-spec Civic five-door hatchback is 30 mm wider, 20 mm lower, and 130 mm longer. It sits on larger and wider tires and benefits from shorter overhangs which certainly boost the visual appeal even further. Up front it hosts LED headlights and daytime running lights along with an aggressive bumper and a sculpted hood.
The back of the car is even more striking thanks to a prominent bumper and dual exhaust tips mounted in the center. The Civic hatchback prototype has a pair of C-shaped LED taillights and double spoilers, one mounted on the roof and another one which interconnects the taillights and hosts the third brake light.
Photos of the interior have not been released, but the cabin will likely be similar to the sedan and coupe launched in United States. Given the car’s increased proportions, expect the interior to be substantially roomier than the outgoing Euro-spec Civic hatchback.
Slated to go on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2017, the new Civic hatchback will be offered with turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder and 1.5-liter four-cylinder i-VTEC gasoline engines. On the diesel side we will find the familiar 1.6-liter i-DTEC which will likely gain some power and provide increased efficiency. Honda will sell the new Civic on the old continent with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional continuously variable transmission.
Production of the Civic in European specification will take place in United Kingdom at Honda’s Swindon factory. Honda could decide to show the Civic in production guise in October at the Paris Motor Show.
