Porsche 718 Boxster marks the return of four-cylinder sports cars

Porsche is making a return to four-cylinder sports cars by introducing the new 718 Boxster at the Geneva Motor Show.

 

The 718 Boxster features a modestly revised front fascia and new bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. The car has also been equipped with revised side skirts, larger air intakes, and three-dimensional LED taillights that are separated by an accent strip with "Porsche" lettering.

 

Interior changes are fairly limited but drivers will find a new steering, a revised dashboard, and an updated Porsche Communication Management system.

 

Bigger changes occur underneath the skin as the entry-level 718 Boxster is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat four engine that develops 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Despite having less displacement than the previous 2.7-liter flat six, the four-cylinder engine produces 35 hp and 74 lb-ft more than the outgoing powertrain.

 

Moving up the 718 Boxster S rewards buyers with a new turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four engine that develops 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 35 hp and 43 lb-ft compared to the previous engine.

 

When equipped with a PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, the 718 Boxster can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 170 mph. The 718 Boxster S can complete the same task in 4.0 seconds before topping out at 177 mph.

 

The Porsche 718 Boxster will arrive at U.S. dealerships in June and pricing starts at $56,000.
