2019 BMW 3 Series Debuts In Paris With Bigger Body And Bolder Look

The BMW 3 Series continues to be the benchmark model in the premium sedan segment, and the German brand wants to make sure its four-door stays that way with the launch of a new generation at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The latest one is even larger than before but balances the larger footprint by shedding some weight.

 

The 2019 3 Series grows nearly 3 inches (76 millimeters) longer than the previous generation, and the wheelbase increases by 1.6 inches (41 mm). The model's front track is 1.7 inches (43 mm) broader, and the rear is up by 0.83 inches (21 mm). Depending on specification, the weight falls by as much as 121 pounds (55 kilograms). A drag co-efficient as low as 0.26 in the U.S. lets the sedan slice through the air.

 

The increased size isn't immediately obvious when viewing the sedan. This four-door is still immediately identifiable as a 3 Series but with some tweaks. The standard full-LED headlights are more angular and attach to a sharper take on the firm's kidney grille. The silhouette is the view that changes the least, but the hood appears a little more bulbous. New taillights stretch farther across the tail.

 

BMW's designers clean up the cabin over the previous generation by incorporating the infotainment system into the center stack rather than placing it on top of the dashboard. The layout lends a more unified look to the interior. The standard layout combines a 5.7-inch digital instrument screen and 8.8-inch infotainment display. As an option, there's an upgrade to a 12.3-inch instrument display and 10.25-inch infotainment screen.

 

North American buyers have only the 330i available at launch in March 2019. It comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the sole gearbox choice, but customers can choose between rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts. The rear-drive version needs 5.6 seconds to hit 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour). The optional M Sport trim adds performance pieces like a stiffer suspension or optional adaptive damper system.

 

The sportier M340i and M340i xDrive will arrive in the U.S. later in the spring, and they'll come with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 382 hp (295 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Newton-meters) of torque. BMW estimates the sprint to 60 mph requiring 4.2 seconds.

 

The 330e plug-in hybrid will join the American range for the 2020 model year.

 

Meanwhile, Europeans have five engines to pick from at launch. The four-cylinder, gas-fueled 320i produces 181 hp (135 kW), and the 330i has 255 hp (190 kW). The four-cylinder turbodiesel 318d offers 148 hp (110 kW), or 188 hp (140 kW) in the 320d. At launch, the sole inline six available is in the 330d that produces 262hp (195 kW). The 320d is the only European model available with all-wheel drive when the sedan goes on sale.

 

The 2019 330i and 330i xDrive will have a starting price of $40,200 (plus $995 for destination). The 330i xDrive will sell for $42,250.
