In August, Ferrari made a surprise unveiling, showing off the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider – the company’s 50th drop-top model.Now that the Paris Motor Show is in full swing, the Italian automaker decided to provide more details about the Pista Spider that make their public debut at the show.
We’ve known since August the Pista Spider’s twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 engine produced 720 horsepower (530 kilowatts) and 568 pound-feet (770 Newton-meters) of torque, which allows the drop-top Ferrari to hit 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 2.85 seconds with a top speed matching the Pista Coupe – 211 mph (340 kph). The engine pairs with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which sports a new shift strategy that reduces shifting times by 30 milliseconds as power routes to the new Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires.
But how’d Ferrari improve the new spider over the outgoing model? With several subtle tweaks that ranged from strengthening engine internals to a 20-percent aerodynamic improvement over the 488 Spider. Engineers took the new engine intake layout developed for the 488 Challenge, which sees the intakes move from the flanks to the rear spoiler area on the Pista Spider. This freed up space allowed for larger intercoolers in front of the rear wheels.
The engine also received numerous improvements. Engineers installed specific valves and springs, strengthened pistons and cylinder heads, thinned the cylinder liners, and added a new cam profile to increase performance. Even with the added strengthening and new parts, the engine is 39 pounds lighter (18 kilograms) than before, which doesn’t make up for the 200 lbs (91 kg) of additional weight added thanks to the retractable hardtop.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider looks like Pista Coupe without a top, but underneath the sleek exterior are several changes and improvements that give the Spider improved performance and handling. Pricing information remains elusive, but it will be more than the coupe, which starts at $350,050.
